Seven attempts to write this page. The first six were technically accurate and completely dishonest. This one — the one you're reading now — is what we actually believe, stripped of everything we thought we were supposed to say. It took eight years of studio work and one very long conversation at midnight in August 2016 to get here.

I Draft History

Every attempt
we rejected.

Before a brief lands on a client's desk, it's been torn apart by us first. The same applies to this page. Here is the wreckage. Read it as the only honest summary of how agencies think about themselves — and why we couldn't accept any of it.

Rejected — Draft 1
Veil is a full-service creative agency specialising in brand, digital, and strategy for ambitious companies.

Why it was crossed out

Every agency in the world could have written this. "Full-service." "Ambitious companies." These are words that mean nothing because they cost nothing to say. Draft 1 gets deleted in sixty seconds flat.

Rejected — Draft 2
We're not your typical agency. We're a studio that lives at the intersection of art and commerce.

Why it was crossed out

"We're not your typical agency" is what every typical agency writes. "Intersection of art and commerce" appears on approximately 4,000 agency websites. This draft lasted four minutes.

Rejected — Draft 3
We make brands people fall in love with. Obsessively crafted. Relentlessly refined.

Why it was crossed out

Getting warmer. The adverbs are doing too much work. "Obsessively" and "relentlessly" are easy to claim and hard to prove. Crossed out because it's more adjective than argument.

Founded in 2016 by Marcus Osei and Elena Brandt with a simple mission: to do the best creative work in the world.

Why it was crossed out

We didn't start with a mission. We started with a refusal. There's a difference. A mission implies a plan. A refusal implies a standard. This draft missed the point of the whole story.

Veil is where brands stop performing and start meaning something.

Why it was crossed out

Actually good. Almost kept. Crossed out because it sounds like we wrote it, not because it isn't true. The best line is the one that sounds like it was discovered, not authored.

Why this one stayed

It arrived at midnight. Elena typed it into a Slack message. Neither of us could argue with it. It didn't try to describe what we do — it described why we couldn't stop. That's the real about page. The rest is evidence.

II The Founding Argument

August 14,
2016.
11:47pm.

Marcus and Elena had been in the same Slack channel for three hours. They'd both just resigned from their respective agencies — neither knew the other had. They were supposed to be commiserating. Instead, they were doing this.

This is the conversation that replaced six drafts of an about page. The entire studio's reason for existing is in seventeen messages sent between 11:47pm and 12:03am on a Tuesday in August.

It hasn't changed since.

Rewrote an entire animation system at 11pm the night before a major launch because it was 2% less smooth on mid-range Android. The client never knew. The launch was on time. He would do it again without hesitation, which is either inspiring or alarming depending on your perspective.

Has printed competitor work and taped it to the studio wall with "unacceptable" written underneath. Not as aggression — as a reminder. Also holds the studio record for most consecutive hours arguing about a single typeface: 11hrs, 22min, for a luxury skincare brand in 2023. The typeface was changed. She was right.

Every agency has statistics. The ones below are the ones we're not supposed to share — the metrics that explain the work better than any case study.

Every one began with someone in the room saying "we've never made anything quite like this." That's not a warning sign. It's how we know we haven't done it before — which is the only reason to do it at all.

Not because the budget was wrong. Because the brief didn't deserve our best thinking, and we'd rather have a gap in the calendar than a piece of work we're ashamed of at 2am. Both have happened. We prefer the gap.

V The Standard

Not a list
of values.
One argument.

Most agency values pages are aspirational. Ours is operational — the logic we use to make actual decisions. If you disagree with any of it, we're probably not the right fit. That's not a warning. It's a filter.

The only brief we've ever received that was complete was the three-sentence one. The forty-seven-page brief was a wall of anxiety disguised as clarity. We've learned that the length of a brief is inversely correlated with the client's confidence in what they actually need. Our first job on every project is to find the real question underneath the stated one. The brief is never the brief. The brief is the symptom. We don't solve for the symptom. We look for the condition.

We believe speed is a symptom of insecurity. Fast turnarounds exist because agencies are afraid to slow down — afraid the client will leave, afraid the budget will shrink, afraid the window will close. We've run this experiment both ways. Slowing down produces better work. Better work produces longer relationships. Longer relationships produce more revenue than any fast turnaround ever has. Slowness is not a luxury. It's a competitive advantage dressed as patience.

We've declined acquisitions, investment rounds, and network partnerships. Not out of principle — out of arithmetic. Every dollar of outside money comes with a fraction of outside opinion. Enough fractions and you're no longer making the decisions. We want to make the decisions. Specifically, we want to make the decision to redo work that isn't good enough at our own cost without a finance committee questioning the write-off. Independence isn't a philosophy. It's a prerequisite for the work we want to make.

The twelve clients who cried at the brand reveal were not overwhelmed by the visual. They were overwhelmed by recognition — the feeling of seeing themselves accurately for the first time. That's what the work is supposed to do. Not impress. Not win awards. Not trend. Produce the sensation of being truly, accurately seen. Everything else — the craft, the process, the arguments about typefaces at midnight — is infrastructure for that moment.

Creative tensions

Where we
hold the

Every studio claims balance. We don't. These are the actual tensions we live in — not resolved, not equal, but consciously calibrated. The percentage shows where we lean, right now, by design.

Craft Speed

78% craft. We have never apologised for a slow timeline. We have apologised for work that wasn't good enough. One of those apologies costs more.

Provocation Safety

70% provocation. The work that made clients nervous is the work that made their competitors nervous. The correlation is consistent enough that we treat it as data.

Independence Collaboration

65% independent. We take direction seriously and creative briefs as starting points, not contracts. The best clients know these are different things.

Restraint Maximalism

60% restraint. What's left in the room after you remove everything unnecessary — that's the design. But we know when excess is the point.
